We are one of the leading companies when it comes to reviving the railway network in Colombia. For example, in 2020, and despite challenges associated with COVID-19, we were able to move close to 50.000 tons of cement through the Belencito – Bogotá and Puerto Triunfo – Puerto Wilches routes. For 2021, we expect to transport approximately 70.000 tons on both routes, which accounts for a 30% increase.
This transport alternative, both efficient and sustainable, made it possible to cut down on 321 tons of CO2 last year and 505 tons since 2018 when railway operations officially restarted in Colombia. This represents a cutback of more than 4.600 truck trips, and it is the equivalent of planting 1.800 trees.
Additionally, and in line with our Sustainability Strategy, we are effectively keeping roads from wearing out by working on this project. We are saving on fuel consumption, and we are cutting back on traffic accident risks and traffic congestion/traffic jams.
We are currently using the Belencito – Bogotá route three times a week, while we started operations in the Puerto Triunfo – Puerto Wilches route.
It is worth noting that in the United States, we have around 1.500 train wagons where a significant portion of goods are transported around the country.
