Trees are an essential source of life-giving oxygen in the air that we breathe. They filter out harmful particulate matter and other pollutants common in the urban or suburban areas that would otherwise make it into our lungs.

As a member of the GCCA, Argos is committed to helping fight global warming and reducing the amount of CO2 produced in our industry. That is why in 2018, Argos USA joined a five-member team in targeting a closed-loop model of carbon dioxide capture and recycling in cement and concrete production. In an early-2018 demonstration, we were able to use CO2 produced from our Calera, Alabama cement plant, in commercial concrete produced at our Glenwood plant in Georgia. Equipped with CarbonCure Technologies such as CO2 storage and injection devices, our team was able to use the greenhouse gas to promote cement hydration in high to zero slump concrete.

Joining Argos and CarbonCure in the team are Sustainable Energy Solutions, a cryogenic CO2 capture technology developer; Praxair, a specialist in the delivery of CO2 and other industrial gases; and Kline Consulting LLC, whose principal, John Kline, oversaw the Argos USA cement-concrete demonstration. The closed-loop CO2 project is an extension of CarbonCure’s participation in the $20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE Challenge, which incentivizes and accelerates the development of integrated carbon capture and utilization methods.

We are proud to announce that with the help of Argos and the other team members, CarbonCure was able to become one of two finalists to prevail in the NRG Cosia Carbon Xprize competition. CarbonCure received a $7.5 million reward to help further them in developing new and innovative ways to help reuse and eliminate CO2 emissions.

Climate change can seem like an insurmountable challenge. Team CarbonCure and our fellow Carbon Xprize contenders have demonstrated that the challenge is surmountable and that we have the solutions available today to create meaningful change,” says CarbonCure President Jennifer Wagner, team leader. “The prize money will be used to accelerate our path to our mission of reducing 500 million tons of carbon emissions annually by 2030.

A perfect way to celebrate Arbor Day in 2021!
