The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) recognized Argos’ Roberta Plant, located in Alabama, and Harleyville, in South Carolina, with the ENERGY STAR® certification (for the sixth and fourth consecutive year, respectively). This certification is due to our commitment to improving energy performance by strategically managing energy across the entire organization and making cost-effective improvements to its plants.
This recognition signifies that these plants perform in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meet strict EPA’s strict efficiency performance levels.
We are extremely proud to obtain once again this certification, which reiterates our commitment to the implementation of sustainable practices focused on the responsible use of natural resources, the articulation of energy efficiency initiatives and the mitigation of climate change. This recognition motivates us to continue working on the deepening and materialization of innovative alternatives that allow us to continue strengthening the sustainable performance of our operations to contribute to the generation of value for our stakeholders, María Isabel Echeverri, Argos Legal and Sustainability Vice-president.
Our Harleyville Plant is also distinguished for having the United States’ largest cement mill, which operates with approximately half of the power consumption required by a traditional mill. Also, this plant co-processes waste.
Moreover, Roberta Plant has an installed capacity of up to 1.5 million tons per year and has been historically recognized for its high level of alternative fuels and energy optimization processes implementation.
In 2021, the Argos Digital Twin platform is being tested for further heat recovery efficiency in the clinker cooler operation. With efficiency, equipment reliability improvements are critical to a stable operation. This is not only helpful for energy efficiency, but it also ensures stable supply of product to our customers.

About ENERGY STAR®
Was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. To date, tens of thousands of buildings and plants across all fifty states have earned the certification. Besides, is a hallmark in power efficiency that recognizes industries that engage in low power consumption products and services, develop strategies to provide substantial power savings and create products that prevent greenhouse gas emissions, in compliance with strict guidelines set forth by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy.
What does ENERGY STAR® certification signify?
- It is the only environmental program in the United States that certifies energy efficiency based on actual, verified energy performance and objective measures, providing a guarantee of savings for plants within their industrial sectors.
- It’s recognized by more than 90 percent of the American public and tied with the Good Housekeeping® seal as the most influential consumer emblem in the nation.
- ENERGY STAR® certified buildings and plants use less energy because they are more efficient and therefore have lower energy costs than average performing plants. Earning and maintaining this certification demonstrates that a plant is well run and is better-than-average in managing its energy costs.
- It demonstrates our positive relationships with neighbors and communities. Because this is a key point to obtain the recognition.
