Building Community

Our Roberta Plant is taking action in its local community by helping plan and establish a storm shelter. Currently, the local community is voluntarily served by a few local churches and one small public works building during severe weather events. Our Calera plant is working with locals to create and develop a dedicated tornado shelter fitted with distinct signage and centrally located within the community to provide a permanent and highly-visible location during weather events.

The project would directly benefit residents of the City of Calera and the surrounding community without adequate severe weather shelters (i.e., homes without basements and slab-built homes) and any commuters passing through the City of Calera or local area that need to abandon their vehicles and seek shelter upon warning of imminent threat.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

This year our Roberta Cement plant won its 8th Energy Star certification award! Commercial buildings that earn EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification use an average of 35 percent less energy than typical buildings and release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In part, this recognition can be attributed to Multivariate process control systems that are now implemented and used on all major equipment shops. Another significant contributor to efficiency is equipment reliability, and this is not only helpful for energy efficiency, but it also ensures a stable supply of products to our customers.

Nature and Wildlife

Roberta received Energy & Environmental Award in the Land Stewardship Category for their LKD (Lime Kiln Dust) Reclamation Project. Roberta’s (LKD) reclamation project was strictly voluntary, taking the uncovered and Unstable LKD pile and turning it into a thriving ecosystem. Not only was the pile an eyesore, but it was also causing a lack of vegetation. Now with over Twenty-one native plant species, Roberta has provided a vibrant natural habitat for a diverse collection of native and migratory animal species. Looking toward the future, engineered stormwater management ponds will eventually offer a diverse habitat for wetland plant and animal species.

Before

After

This project was a huge undertaking. With over 21 Acres covered and 420,000 yards of material moved, this project was estimated to cost around $5 Million to complete. However, our Roberta Quarry Crew and Saiia Construction could complete the project for only $1.45 Million, which was $4.56 Million under the project fixed bid cost estimate. Proving that not only are projects like this great for our environment, but they also might be more doable than you might think.

Safety First

Another award Roberta recently won was the AMA’s President’s Community Safety Award. This award is open to all companies operating a mine or processing facility in the State of Alabama. It is intended to spotlight a company that has expanded its culture of safety to include its local community. The Argos Roberta Cement Plant’s emergency response program, ALERT, was developed in partnership with the Calera Fire Department to increase preparedness for emergencies.
