Today, 42 families from Manrique – La Honda, in Medellín, have access to more dignified housing conditions thanks to the arrival of Hogares Saludables, a program led by Cementos Argos and the Grupo Argos Foundation, under the initiative of Creamos Social Valor del Grupo Business, which seeks to generate employment, strengthen production chains and promote a positive social transformation. In Medellín, Hogares Saludables has other allies such as Pastoral Social, Coonvite and the Sena. This year, the project will also be carried out in San Javier, Moravia and San Cristóbal, for a total of 200 beneficiary families in the city.
Interventions to homes consist primarily of the replacement of dirt floors with concrete floors, and also includes the plastering of walls and adaptations of bathrooms and kitchens in some cases. Participants also receive training in basic construction from the Seine, in order to grant them skills that give them access to new alternatives for economic subsistence.
Likewise, the alliance contemplates the connection of young people from the community to the Sena trainings with the possibility of obtaining a construction certification in order to subsequently have the opportunity to establish a link with the construction sector in order to promote formal employment. In addition, construction foremen and hardware stores present in these neighborhoods and territories are articulated to the program as fundamental actors.

This is the evolution of a program that we have been executing successfully from Cementos Argos in other regions of Colombia and that is now being strengthened. Today we are in Medellín announcing these 200 homes, but towards the end of the year we hope to start in Yumbo, Valle del Cauca. We are convinced that this initiative has all the strength to contribute to closing equity gaps due to its comprehensiveness. Our dream is to improve the conditions of 10.000 homes in five years in the different regions of the country. We can achieve this by integrating efforts with clients, collaborators and other allies, and leveraged on initiatives such as the decision to donate 200 pesos from the company for each bag of gray cement sold ”, expressed Juan Esteban Calle, our president.

“We are proud to present a program that we know will positively transform the lives of hundreds of families in the city and that will allow us to continue generating well-being and contributing to the solution of the problems that we share as a society. We will continue to lead projects with high impact and aligned with the creation of social value ”, stated Jorge Mario Velásquez, president of Grupo Empresarial Argos.
The program began in mid-June in Medellín and it is expected that in October it will reach the goal of 200 intervened homes.
The replacement of floors on land with concrete floors not only fulfills an aesthetic and functional function by being visually more pleasant and substantially increasing the comfort of the families that inhabit the houses, but also improves health conditions by avoiding the transmission of possible diseases and contribute to the cognitive development of the children who live in the house. The impact on health occurs because the floors on the ground are carriers of parasites, bacteria and viruses that are potentially harmful to human health and, in addition, favor the spread of insects that can transmit different types of diseases.

“For me it is a blessing because one always wants to have a very nice little house, to have a pleasant space where one arrives and feels comfortable. My message is that you have to trust a lot and have a lot of hope in many people and many institutions that do collaborate, ”said Maira Padilla, beneficiary of Healthy Homes.
The beneficiary families are selected with the support of Pastoral Social, regardless of their religious beliefs, who with their presence in the neighborhoods can easily identify the families with a higher degree of need for intervention through a socioeconomic study.
