Recent improvements to the batch office and warehouse at our Holmes Road location in Houston, Texas, are a shining example of what’s possible with our new 5S program. 5S is a lean methodology for continuous improvement that empowers teams to create and maintain an organized, clean, high-performance workplace.
5S stands for:
- Sort: Remove all unneeded items
- Store: A place for everything and everything in its place
- Shine: Clean up! The easiest way to keep everything clean
- Standardize: Written/visual expectations about how to maintain the organized area
- Sustain: Inspections to help to maintain the improvement
As a part of its 5S implementation, the Holmes Road team paved the remaining production areas in the yard to reduce dusting and improved their outfall building to exceed county standards. In their batch house, they upgraded their restrooms, repaired the AC drainage and renovated the driver’s room with new paint and new flooring.
5S will continue to roll out in Ready-Mix locations in Atlanta, Columbus and Macon, with training scheduled in the first quarter of 2024. The program is designed to improve employee satisfaction, increase quality and promote safety.
