Our Florida Safety team and Driver Trainers have developed a brand new Campaign to help and remind our Mixer Drivers to maintain a high level of awareness at all times. Whether they are climbing in or out the Cab, Walking to the back of the mixer truck, going up or down the ladder or walking to the other side of the truck to grab the extension chutes or store them we want them to always be aware of the danger surrounding their mixer truck.
Tony Ocasio, Driver Instructor – Florida Region and founding member of the ST3P Safety Campaign explains, “The ST3P campaign is such an important safety awareness campaign for our drivers because it is a crucial piece of our safety culture. Nine out of ten mistakes that I notice as a driver instructor are entirely preventable. All we need to do is take our time and be mindful of our surroundings at all times.
65% of our driver’s injuries occur around their mixer truck, 30% are from entering or exiting the cab, another 30% are around the ladder area, climbing or descending, and 20% of injuries occur from mishandling the extension chutes. This can be a combination of not properly lifting their legs, not seeing where they are going etc.
We want our drivers to Stop and Slow down, Think and gather their thoughts, and plan their route around the mixer. The attention span of an adult is about 8 seconds; we need to do a better job of staying focused on the task at hand. Evaluate – scan your surroundings, look at the ground conditions, and identify possible hazards. Finally, always use 3 points of contact when climbing in or out of the cab, climbing or coming down the ladder, and getting on or off the DOT bumper.
If we can stay focused and alert to our surroundings and use the ST3P methodology, we can reduce and prevent our drivers from getting injured. Enabling them a safe return to their family and loved ones. It is a win/win situation for all!”
