What is Phishing?

Before we can learn how to prevent phishing attacks, it is important to understand what exactly phishing is. Phishing is a cybercrime in which a target or targets are contacted by email, telephone or text message by someone posing as a legitimate institution to lure individuals into providing sensitive data such as personally identifiable information, banking and credit card details, and passwords.

The information is then used to access important accounts and can result in identity theft and financial loss.

How to Prevent Phishing Attacks

• You will now see a notification at the top of your email stating “Caution” when you receive emails from outside of our organization.  Do not open emails from people you don’t know.  Especially when these emails include links or downloadable files.
•  Take care when you receive shared information through OneDrive links or files attached.
•  Don’t supply your account and password on non-corporate sites.
• Always check that the URL of the web page you are introducing your credentials is https://login.microsoftonline.com
